Weapon Safety Guidelines

As a participant in The Pact LARP events, it's essential to adhere to specific safety rules and guidelines, particularly concerning the use of prop weapons. This article will guide you through the safety regulations specific to The Pact, ensuring your thrilling role-play experience doesn't compromise your physical well-being.

MELEE WEAPONS: SOFT BUT MIGHTY

In The Pact, all melee weapons, whether a sword, mace, axe, or dagger, should be constructed from safe, foam-based materials. These foam props allow players to enjoy the realism of battle without the risk of physical harm. You don't need to get your weapon checked if it originates from a trusted manufacturer and shows no signs of damage. However, all thrusting weapons require an inspection regardless of their origin.

HOMEMADE WEAPONS: CRAFTER WITH CAUTION

Many Pact LARPers enjoy crafting their own weapons. While we encourage this level of involvement, it's important to note that every homemade weapon requires inspection by our event staff before each game. Even if your weapon is not new, it must still undergo this safety check.

BOWS AND CROSSBOWS: PACT-APPROVED ARCHERY

All arrows or bolts must be made of soft foam, and the draw strength of the bow or crossbow should not exceed 30 lbs. As the Canadian regulations regarding light crossbows remain unclear, crossbows less than 55 cm in length are not accepted in our events.

THROWN WEAPONS: AIRBORNE SAFETY

Thrown weapons mustn't have a solid core. Just like their melee counterparts, thrown weapons should be made entirely of soft materials to ensure safety upon impact.

ANTIQUE BLASTERS: OLD-WORLD CHARM

The Pact has a particular fondness for antique blasters such as muskets, flintlocks, and blunderbusses. These weapons should fire safe, unmodified foam darts or balls, such as Nerf or Rival products. Notable manufacturers like B3 Imagination Studio and Fakesteel Armory have quality models for sale. You could also use a safely modified Nerf blaster. A multi-projectile weapon, like a blunderbuss, inflicts damage only once per shot, even if the target is hit with multiple projectiles.

SHIELDS: DEFENDING SAFELY

Shields used in The Pact should, at minimum, have edges padded for safety and must not have sharp edges or protrusions. Even if a shield is designed for defence, it shouldn't cause harm or damage other weapons upon impact. A shield may not be used to hit another participant in any way.

BOMBS: HARMLESS EXPLOSIONS

Bombs have their own set of safety guidelines. These props must be coreless, ensuring they cause no harm upon impact. These props should be designed to resemble bottles, alchemical elements, or mechanical devices. This æsthetic requirement keeps the game atmosphere intact and encourages creativity in prop design. Even though these "bombs" might be a central part of your strategic gameplay, their first role is to be safe for all participants. Hence, like all other props, they must adhere to the principle of realism without harm.

OVERSIZED WEAPONS: A SIZE LIMIT

While variety and creativity in weapon design can enrich the LARP experience, The Pact has specific guidelines concerning oversized weapons. Items such as faux tree trunks or swords larger than an average person are not permitted in our events. The reason for this is two-fold. Firstly, the sheer size of these props could pose a potential safety risk during intense gameplay. Secondly, oversized weapons can disrupt the balanced, fair-play environment The Pact aims to promote.

In The Pact, our main goal is to provide an immersive, engaging, and safe LARP experience. By following these guidelines, you can enjoy the excitement of the battlefield while ensuring a safe environment for yourself and your fellow players. Let's bring our stories to life with the spirit of adventure and safety in mind!
